Students will be strongly encouraged to re-sit GCSE English, Mathematics, Science and Welsh (First Language), where required, and provision is made for these subjects to be studied within the first year of their course. Examinations will usually be sat at the end of the first year of study.
English
During this course students will complete four pieces of written coursework, be assessed on Speaking and Listening and prepare for the two examination papers. Advice and support will be provided throughout the course in order to improve the quality of both written and spoken expression. Students will practise creative and transactional writing, as well as improving their ability to analyse literary and media texts with confidence. Analysis of a drama text will form part of the assessment. Additional support is also available through Workshops.
GCSE English is a vital qualification. Effective reading, writing and speaking skills are necessary for all jobs, and most employers will usually insist on a grade C or above in English.

D or E grade to re-sit in one year.
Mathematics
This course covers the National Curriculum in Number, Algebra, Shape and Space, Handling Data and Using and Applying Mathematics. Students will study basic numeracy, using a calculator, fractions, ratio and proportion, measurement, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, graphs and statistics, which includes topics such as interpretation of diagrams and probability.
GCSE grade C or above is required for Teacher Training courses and is a requirement for most Science courses above GCSE.
Entry requirements
D grade from the Foundation or Intermediate tier to re-sit in one year. Students with a grade below D may do the course over two years.

Science
GCSE Science (AQA Board) is aimed at students who need to obtain a general science qualification and covers the core modules in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. During the year there is an emphasis on revision and examination technique through lectures, practical exercises and past examination questions. Higher Tier entry enables achievement up to a single pass at A* while Foundation Tier enables a pass at C grade. Practical based coursework is undertaken in the second term and accounts for 25% of the course marks. This qualification is necessary for those who wish to pursue a career in Primary teaching and many other Higher Education courses.

D or E grade to re-sit in one year. May re-sit with an F or G with English and Maths at grade C.
