An exhibition of work has opened at Gorseinon College, the result of a collaborative project involving students from the College, Pentrehafod Comprehensive School and Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr.
Working in partnership with Swansea Print Workshop, 60 young people worked alongside artists Owen Griffiths and Aled Simons to enhance their observational drawing and printmaking skills. They participated in life drawing sessions in a studio environment at Gorseinon College and created a series of figurative studies, which were later developed and transformed into prints at Swansea Print Workshop, using a range of relief and serigraph techniques. In addition to learning valuable creative skills, the experience enabled the learners to engage with the wider context of professional arts practice.
The primary aim of this project was to raise the awareness of the accessibility and creative potential of printmaking as an art form, and to provide bilingual expertise in observational drawing and printmaking techniques for learners wishing to extend their skills base
"The Life Drawing to Print project, which was supported by the Arts Council of Wales and South West Wales Reaching Wider Partnership, has given many students from different schools the opportunity to draw from a life model in a professional studio environment. This type of activity would not usually be offered in a school setting. Its purpose was to provide each student with an intensive drawing programme and to develop the work into print. It's amazing to see how much the students are able progress creatively in such a relatively short period of time when given the correct instruction and encouragement. The results are outstanding", said project organiser Sarah Hopkins.
The exhibition, on the Belgrave Road campus, is open to the public between 9.30 am and 4.00 pm (Monday to Friday) until Friday 5th March.
